Don’t compromise on safety when saving on energy bills

Firefighters in Herefordshire and Worcestershire are reminding people not to imperil their safety and that of loved ones when saving money on energy bills.

Although Easter brought us warm weather, there could still be some chilly days ahead and cold nights before summer fully arrives, and the really long evenings are still some way off.

So don’t risk candle fires or other fires by keeping the heating off to save money as energy prices go up.

Anyone lighting candles should keep the naked flame well away from flammable materials and to keep them in proper holders.

Emma Roberts, Head of Prevention, said: “If you’re thinking about how to save money, please don’t compromise your safety in the process.

“We’re urging the public to be cautious when using candles, log burners and open fires to reduce the risk of harm.

“Smoke alarms are always the best line of defence for fire protection and they’re absolutely vital if you’re making use of cheap rate off-peak electricity.

To use candles safely, here are some top tips to think about:

  • never leave lit candles unattended and always put them out when you leave the room, even for a moment
  • place your candles carefully on a stable surface, out of the reach of pets and children
  • keep candles away from flammable objects like curtains, furniture, bedding and books
  • don’t move candles once they are lit, and don’t leave them near open windows
  • do not burn several candles close together as this might cause the flame to flare
  • only burn candles in a well-ventilated room, out of drafts, vents or air currents – to help prevent rapid or uneven burning, soot, and dripping
  • put candles out with a snuffer or a spoon – sparks can fly if you blow them out
  • always put scented candles in a heat resistant holder – they’re designed to liquefy when heated to maximum fragrance
  • fit a smoke alarm and test it now and weekly
  • make sure that everyone knows what to do if a fire happens– and practise your escape route
  • If there is a fire, get out, stay out and call 999.
