Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service has teamed up with a number of partner agencies to help keep the two counties’ year 6 pupils, aged 10 and 11, safe by launching a new initiative.
The Service has worked closely with West Mercia Police’s Road Safety Team to set up an interactive safety and behaviour project called Safe Zone, which aims to encourage good citizenship and reduce accidents, injury, crime and protect young people through education and awareness.
This is a school year where most children are moving on and gaining more independence. The programme is normally delivered physically to schools but it’s been necessary to adapt ways of working for this year due to the pandemic.
It’s important that the current restrictions did not prevent Year 6 students in Worcestershire from missing out on vital information so this is now a virtual delivery available to all schools.
“We are very excited to welcome students to our Year 6 Virtual Safety Challenge Safe Zone,” said Caroline Webster from the HWFRS Prevention team.
“We hope they enjoy taking part and that it empowers them to make positive choices when faced with situations where they may be unsure how to react.
“The key safety messages raise awareness of how to stay safe in different environments – whether in the home, outdoors or online. They cover both personal and community safety.
“The messages include information around fire, road, water, and electrical safety and issues around anti-social behaviour and personal safety.
“We are grateful to John Campion, West Mercia Police and Crime Commissioner, for supporting with funding and thank Western Power Distribution, The Royal Life Saving Society UK, West Mercia Police and North Worcestershire Community Safety Partnership for providing specialist content.
“Thanks also to Information Solutions & The Web Orchard for creating the website.”
