Tell us about your role

As Chief Fire Officer since 2021, I have overall responsibility for Hereford and Worcester Fire and Rescue Service which has around 750 members of staff. The Service delivers the Response function through the 25 fire stations, as well as dedicated departments delivering our Prevention and Protection Services. This is all ably supported by a host of other departments that enable the Service to function.

My main role is to ensure that the organisation delivers the best possible and most efficient, emergency response, prevention and protection services to the counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.

It is important that I work closely with our elected officials who govern us through the Hereford and Worcester Fire Authority, and also ensure that we invest and plan  sustainably to try to ensure that the decisions we make today support the future leaders of the Service.

Also, as an active member of the National Fire Chiefs Council (NFCC), I also play a role in representing the Service nationally and help shape and influence policy and direction at a national level.

Tell us more about your fire service career

As of 2024, I have spent 32 years in the Fire Service. I began my Fire Service career as a firefighter at Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service before moving to London Fire Brigade a few years later to serve as a Station Commander. I joined Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service (HWFRS) in 2001 and progressed through various roles in most areas of the Service, before taking up the role of Chief Fire Officer and Chief Executive in 2021.

What makes HWFRS a great place to work?

Simple answer to that question is, the people, we employ great people who are passionate and committed to the Service and without them we simply could not function. HWFRS is a dynamic, forward thinking and efficient organisation that gets things done, and I get a lot of job satisfaction from seeing that happen. It’s also fantastic to be part of such a positive workforce that are committed to making our counites a safer place to live.
