Firefighter Tim Hood, Pebworth

“At the taster session everyone was so friendly and welcoming. I learned about the role, what was required and I had a go at a ladder climb and equipment carry, all on a very hot evening in 30 degree heat! I really enjoyed it, gave it some thought and applied. Started my training in January 2019 and passed out in early March that year.

Tim’s full-time job during the day is an Aftersales Manager for a leading agricultural machinery supplier. He provides night and weekend cover for the Fire Station.

“There have been a few occasions since starting have I been out at a call all night. I have two children and so juggling my On-Call firefighter role with family life and a full time job can at times be a challenge. But, it is so rewarding to be able to do what I can to help the local community. The children love that their dad is a firefighter.

“We have a great team at Pebworth with our priority to keep the truck on the run. When there is a new starter, we make sure that we are welcoming, and give up time to help each other out. It is a great team environment, we have a strong team bond.”

Tim remembers his first shout being a chimney fire. It was real eye opener. We helped them to understand the importance of fire safety and fitted smoke alarms for them. “Knowing that we have made a difference is a great feeling. We all feel the same. The community knows that if they need us, we will be there for them.” It’s not all about fires though,Tim has also been called out to local flooding, RTCs and has supported Warwickshire with a helicopter fire.

“I would recommend this role to anyone considering becoming a firefighter. It is so rewarding being part of such a great team. The Service has helped me to develop new skills, including decision making, confidence building and working under pressure – these are skills that I have taken back into my full-time role. Give it a go!”
